I have two feelings about this:

First, I also never want to be a companion, but for different reasons. As a companion, a person faces a lot of dangers and life threatening situations, and often their loved ones stopped her, too. I would not want to go through anything like that.

Secondly, I do not think actually are disposable. The Doctor is very long-lived compared to the people he brings with him, so he goes to see his relations with them as temporary. This does not mean that he does not care about them or just sees them as pets. I've met people who've only been for a very brief period in my life, but still they have touched my life and I'm glad I knew them.
