(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)... So? Not to be abrupt, my apologies, but being a companion isn't just or even always primarily about how much the Doctor cares about them. Some of it is about exploring time and space, some of it is about realising things about themselves, some of it is about escaping their lives and finding new ones. Some of the companions moved on from him rather than he from them (Jo, Tegan, Martha, etc). Some of them needed to get away from their places in time and he was a handy ticket out that became something more important, some of them never wanted to be the in the TARDIS at all but grew because of their experiences there, some of them were so damaged because of their experiences that they left because the joy of travelling with the Doctor wasn't enough to offset the dangers they lived through. Some of them just found things worth staying in place for, and sent him onwards with their blessings.
It's not about the Doctor loving and leaving people and replacing them once they're gone. It's about the Doctor needing company and finding it in the random strangers thrown his way, what those people go on to become because of him/their experiences, and how they impact and shape him in the process.
I'm not sure I'd want to be a companion for the same reason I'm not sure I'd really want to be a superhero: vastly increased chances of dying horribly or, given Who, fates much worse than death. How much the Doctor will care about me and remember me is a bit down the list, since he seems to remember more or less everyone he randomly meets, let alone travels with.
