Same here. It doesn't matter to me whether or not I see any of myself in a character, what matters is whether they're written well and are believable.

Then again, I just don't get the whole idea of projecting yourself onto a character period, because to me that sort of defeats the entire purpose of fiction. I don't want stories about people like me, I want stories that are about people and experiences that aren't anything like my real life at all.

What I'm seeing in this thread is a dichotomy between using fiction as a mirror and as a window.
I guess some people read to better understand themselves, and others read to experience something entirely new. And I fall into your camp.
