This. I'm lucky to live in a largeish town with good sidewalk coverage, but I had to give up a job I really liked because I lost my car and the days got short. Walking 1.5 miles within city limits is no problem for me; walking 1.5 miles along a rural highway in the dark with no sidewalks, no streetlights, and nothing between the ditch and the shoulder was 1.5 miles too far.
