This looks cute. What's it got to do with C&H?

It tries to do pretty much everything Calvin and Hobbes tried to do. The characterizations are different, but it's easy to see Calvin's influence on Phoebe and Hobbes's influence on Marigold. It's got the zany humor, the commentary on childhood, the commentary on societal ills, and even the poetry, and none of it's quite as good as the original. (The one major change is character growth--while Calvin was static, Phoebe grows and learns, and even Marigold has had some surprising realizations about herself.)

I actually read several panels since making that comment, and wow, I pretty much completely agree. It pales in comparison to C&H, but I can see the influences easily, and on its own I think it's cute and enjoyable. Thanks for making this secret and hooking me up with it!

Also, based on where I found it, I want to ask: is it a newspaper comic? because I read those in my local paper when I can and I've never seen this one.

I don't think it runs in newspapers. Which is odd, because it's on Gocomics, and I thought newspaper comics were their thing. (For instance, they run Doonesbury and Frazz.)

Why not just enjoy the comic for what it is instead of constantly comparing it to something else?

let's be fair here: being as good or as clever or as insightful as Calvin and Hobbes is an incredibly high bar. Calvin and Hobbes is one of the best comic strips ever made. it's good and there's not really anything that is exactly like it and as good as it is. even coming close to filling the void Calvin and Hobbes left behind is a pretty solid accomplishment.

please tell me that's the worst joke of the comic strip

Sadly, it's not even in the worst five.

I'd say a good representative of how the better jokes tend to go is http://www.gocomics.com/heavenly-nostrils/2012/07/15#.UzNhKfldXr4

My favorite is http://www.gocomics.com/heavenly-nostrils/2013/08/11#.UzNhhvldXr4

I really wanted to like this comic because I love the concept, but it's just so unfunny. It pains me.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-26 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, a Heavenly Nostrils secret!

I don't even think about comparing it to Calvin and Hobbes, personally.

Why are we trying to compare comics though? Just enjoy the strip for what it is and not for what you wish it was.

Mostly I compare HN to Ozy and Millie, and then remember that she won't draw any more Ozy and Millie and get sad. That strip had a good run.
