But always-a-girl AUs are usually OOC, because most characters would not be the same people or in the same situations if they weren't men.

That's an argument that nobody will ever win. But I can say that I've definitely read always-a-girl AUs that I've felt were completely in character still.

I don't know. I'm not a particularly feminine woman so I don't know. I think it depends. Besides, I don't want to start some flamey wanky BS by coming down hard in either direction.

And on the other hand, always-a-girl AUs that rely completely on stereotypes of what women are without taking into consideration the actual character and what they might be as a woman are equally bad (worse in my view).

IMHO, that's really a nature-versus-nurture kind of thing, and there's no necessarily "right" or "wrong" way to say that Character A would act if they were born and raised the opposite gender, without specifically accounting for external influences like parenting and culture.
