Headcanon time!

My thoughts are that Belle's mother was independently wealthy/had family money and Belle was raised in the city in luxury. Then classic Disney parent death, Maurice and Belle couldn't stand living there any longer (everything reminds them of her), so they move out to the countryside for a change of scenery. Cue start of movie, where Belle dislikes the provincial town and taking care of chickens when she's used to museums and theaters and libraries and high culture.

...Sorry. That was probably more than was asked for.

That is some good head canon. I can actually see where Belle would feel even more lonely, and out of place in the town if she'd had people she could relate to before in the city.

That works really well with her lines at the beginning of the song, "Every morning just the same/ Since the morning that we came/ To this poor provincial town." I had always been curious about where they moved from, but I hadn't considered her description of a "poor provincial town" as a contrast to their old home.
