When is it time to call it quits? (in fandom)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-26 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
What's your limit for when you know it's finally time to break up with your fandom/show/game/etc for good?

I feel like I'm heading that way with a few of my hobbies but I still cling to them because of the goodtimes we've had. *sigh* It's probably time to call it quits, I just haven't quite reached that point yet.

When it begins to feel like a chore instead of fun or even an old habit.

Basically this. I think I only watched Season 8 because it was a habit. After it ended I could not stand to watch anymore.

I usually just sort of slowly drift but when it feels like you're doing it out of obligation, then yeah, time to leave.

If it starts feeling stressful. It's so unnecessary, getting stressed about something like that.

If you don't enjoy it .... let it goooo.

Whenever I feel like I'm no longer enjoying the show. I usually give it a few episodes, but if after every one I am angry/unhappy, then I stop watching. I have too many things in my life that I have to do that stress me out. I'm not going to do things in my free time that upset me.

When watching a show starts feeling like a chore or obligation and isn't fun anymore.

I have no idea.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-26 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to cling to shows and fandoms well past the point I should. Until it is legitimately causing me stress and unhappiness in my life. Which is dumb, but I'm the obbsessive and optimistic type. Basically I keep thinking it could get better, it could come through in the end, it could be what I enjoyed about it in the beginning! Plus, I fall in love with a show because I fall in love with one or more of the characters, so even when the writing is shit I still have that love for a character and it's really hard for me to let it goooooo.

Basically it gets to the point where it is impacting my life and mental state in a highly noticeable way and I have to end up blacklisting and avoiding the internet to break the cycle.

I don't know. I should have quit XXXholic when reading the new chapters felt more like an obligation than like fun. If I had quit soon after the last chapter I liked, the wtf horrible ending wouldn't have left me as bitter.

I should probably quit Sherlock, or at least take a break.

When they destroy whatever parts of the story (characters, relationships, writing, etc.) that made me like the show to begin with.

when it is causing more negative feelings than positive ones

I usually know because I start really checking out other fandoms constantly. In fairness, I tend to be a one fandom person [though I might have a few very short lived fandoms during the duration of being in a major one] so when I start looking more at other fandoms than my major one it's a really good sign I'm ready to move on.

When I get a new fandom and don't make time to dip back into the old one. I pick up new fandoms easily. There are only a few fandoms that I feel like I've clung to, and for most I quit them when I realised that I was spending more time thinking about how much I hated certain fanon characterisations and tropes than enjoying fic. Almost all fanon starts to irritate me sooner or later, so it's a good indicator.

Well, you could try to find a different group for those hobbies? Or you can lurk, that's what a lot of people do.

The moment I stop having fun, or I give up caring is when I quit(it's how I knew when to quit spn, watched up to season 8, tried to keep watching and realised that I just didn't care anymore at all so I dropped it, same with Bones at about the season 4 mark).

Longer than it should be. Usually though, I just get bored with something, take a break, and then forget all about it rather than rage-quit something.

hmm :|a I do not think I've ever done this.

I've drifted away from some stuff I liked as a kid, but I never really stopped liking any of the stuff I started liking since being a teen/adult. Obviously some things lose their shine after a while, but I've never "broken up" with a piece of media.

(As for shows, I don't really watch many shows to begin with, so I've yet to encounter one I definitively decided to stop watching, though I'm behind on some.)
