I grew up in a city that was created to support the military industrial complex, roughly 4-8 hours away from D.C. (depending how how bad traffic was that day). I used to work for a contractor. It was not uncommon to meet federal agents of some kind or another. Additionally, my uncle was in the Secret Service.

Make sure you have a back-up plan. This is the kind of job where a lot of people wash out of training. Even if you get through that, the job itself can be very hard on families. Also, a lot of it seems to revolve around following a paper trail (although I imagine by now that's changed to spying on someone's phone or internet).
