Memorable Death scenes- SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-03-26 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This thread was inspired by some pretty high profile deaths that have come about on tv in the last few weeks, so tell me FS what are your favourite death scenes? Are they your favourite because they we're horrible, came out of nowhere, or pulled your heart strings?

Re: Memorable Death scenes- SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-03-26 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Almost every death in the Buffy/Angel verse was so well done and packed an emotional punch. And it was that type where I was so heartbroken but not in the way where I was angry and felt it was a pointless or wanted to punch the creator or anything.

Except for Serenity. Fuck that movie and those deaths.

Since I already brought up K Project, Mikoto's death scene. All the characters crying and their tattoos disappearing...I was like, "No, why'd you go and do that, anime?"

Re: Memorable Death scenes- SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm curious why do you call it K Project? The series is called just "K" without the Project bit.

My favourite 'surprise' death was probably Henry on MASH because it really felt like a punch to the gut while the most emotionally death for me was probably Ellen and Jo on Supernatural. That scene is so brutal and the woman who played Ellen just knocked it out of the park. I still tear up every time I watch it.

Oh god, Henry! Even knowing that Radar's going to come in and make that announcement - I still feel gutted every single time.

I'll probably come back to add more as the day goes on, but the one that springs most immediately to mind is the big spoilery death from Ursula Vernon's Digger.

It's funny, but if you're talking about the last major death, I don't even think of that as a death scene. The character was to some extent a walking corpse already--that was the scene where he sprang back to life and validated his own existence, if only for a short while.

Wow, thanks for being a good fan and not naming names. I know this thread is tagged but I just started reading Digger!

Kate Todd

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Just...Kate Todd. Those terrible evil creators. It was so clever how it built and built and built tension, and then you relaxed and went "hahaha, silly me for being so worried" and then BAM. That's the only death where I can remember sitting there going "...holy shit" for like ten minutes after the ep ended.

And all the deaths in the Leverage finale were also well done and affecting. Heart strings tugged for sure. (its the reactions of the other characters that do it, and the trip HOLDING HANDS kill me now)

Seconding the Buffy deaths.

Marcus' death on Babylon 5. So heartbreaking.

The Red Wedding. Even though I'm not a huge Robb fan, Catelyn was one of my favorites. And it was particularly memorable on the show because Michelle Farley just nailed it.

Jo and Ellen on Supernatural. Even though I'm still mad they were killed off, at least their death was well done and memorable.

Veronica Mars movie - the death at the end totally shocked me, I actually jumped and was on the edge of my seat for the rest of that scene. So perfectly done.

Prowl in Transformers: Animated had me crying for like an hour afterward. I was more pissed off because it felt like he was killed for the sake of drama because the series was ending.

Dr. Greene on ER broke my heart because I know what it's like to swatch somebody die of cancer.

Jadzia Dax on DS9 pissed me off because the Terry Farrell wanted to leave so they had her character die a really stupid death rather than something more meaningful.

Lal on Star Trek: TNG. Even more heartbreaking is Data couldn't mourn her.

Kosh on Babylon 5. OH MY GOD, that one tore me up. The series finale tore me up too. I loved that show so much.

Oh, Dr. Green. So sad. He was my favorite.

Jadzia's wasn't that memorable to me. Really badly done.

Oh, Kosh. I put Marcus, but Kosh's was memorable too.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still mad about Jadzia. It's been what, 15 years?

I'd be more OK if they didn't kill her off in such a stupid and badly-written way (and *way* too reminiscent of Tasha's death from TNG, I thought). Definitely one of the low points of late-season DS9 - and I'm one of the fans who adored the last 2 seasons!

I gave up on ER after they killed like 10 people in one season. Actors come and go, did they really need to kill everyone who didn't renew their contract? Not one of those characters could, I dunno, move to Denver or something? Lazy writing.

Aeris's death. I've played through the game more than a dozen times and it still gets to me.

The end of Legacy of Kain: Defiance. Raziel..... :( I love it because it fits the story perfectly, it's thematically appropriate, it's emotionally fulfilling in that it's possibly the only way he'll ever be 'free' and he's saving Nosgoth in the process. And yet it's still sad as fuck and somewhat unsatisfying because you want there to be a way for Kain to truly save him and free him from the cycle. It's very bittersweet, and while I'll always dream of a worthy final installment to the series I'm not sure anyone could write a better ending than what Defiance gave us.

A book canon: Flight of the Heron, by DK Broster. I still haven't got over the death in that, many years on. But the author was a nurse in WWI France and I don't doubt that experience went into the writing of the scene.

The deaths of Shosanna Dreyfus and Fredrick Zoller in Inglourious Basterds is gorgeously heartbreaking. It knocked the wind out of me the first time I watched it.

persona 4 spoilers

Nanako's death. Especially if you get the bad ending like I did and she doesn't come back. Oof, that hurt.

Boromir's death in the first LOTR movie. I went with a big group of friends and we were all sniffling and wiping our eyes. I still find it very moving.

Wash, I will forever be mourning Wash.

Boromir in LoTR, though with his I didn't feel so sad in FoTR the first time around, but watching the film again and seeing him in flashbacks makes his death so much sadder to me. He really was a good person and it's sad that he never got to make it home.

Allison Argent, I don't tend to cry over character deaths very often but I actually cried for her. Like I get the actress wanted out but I am still so sad that they decided to kill her instead of having her leave the country or something. She was my #2 in TW and I'm not going to stop being sad anytime soon over her.

That's all I can think of atm(I'm sure I've got more but I'm stumped right now).

I like when characters go out like champions. Ellen and Jo from Supernatural, Juliet and Charlie from LOST.

Juliet's death scene though... really made me question the show for a minute. If the fall didn't (immediately) kill her, and the crushing by tons of metal didn't (immediately) kill her, and the wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey stuff didn't (immediately) kill her, and the FUCKING NUCLEAR EXPLOSION didn't (immediately) kill her - when Sawyer found her, my first thought was "fuck this are people immortal now? Is she Richard the Second or something?"

I didn't even like her character much - but the "damnit, blow up!" scene was pretty boss.

spoilers for everything I guess - ME3, WoT, HG, HP, FMA, Advance Wars, Homestuck

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-03-27 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
of anything ever? oh, my word. hm...

All of the death scenes in Les Mis (the musical, haven't seen the movie)

Snape's death in HP7 (and the stuff that happened before/after it, it all kinda blurred together for me, waterfall on face)

um, now that I'm thinking of it, most of my "favorite" death scenes are actually scenes that have horrified or saddened me greatly, but in the long run that makes me appreciate how they're written and how cathartic they were. Rue and Cato from HG, Maes Hughes (ugh my heart), Brenner from Advance Wars: DoR (does anyone else play these???? because man), Fred Weasley, Dobby

oh oh oh, VERIN MATHWIN holy shit. That scene. One of my favorite scenes in the series omg.

oh but my very favorite death scene ever? KAI FUCKING LENG. you should have heard me yell.

Also Eridan. Bite me. Most satisfying death ever after Kai Leng.
