For the first, I agree.

For the second, though, I feel like you're missing the point, which, ironically, is to take IC characters and see what would happen if you put them in a new setting. Obviously you don't have to like it, but in and of themselves AUs don't change the characters (as long as they're written well). Now, if you're watching/reading/playing a show/book/game just for the setting, then obviously an AU isn't gonna cut it, but if you're doing it mainly for the characters, AUs can be really fun.
