Exactly. A different scenario and/or different influences on their life.

Like one of the characters I write most about. In canon, he was orphaned young. I've done everything from one parent surviving, to his biological parents still dying, but his being raised by his father's ex-wife, to him being orphaned, but he ends up a single father.

As for settings? It's fun seeing how the character reacts when up against different things, from typical high school/college student, to spoiled trust fund kid, to partially-organic being in a post-apocalyptic world.

Canon is fun, and fine, but sometimes putting a new spin on something (as long as the base characteristics of a character stay in place) can breathe new life into something you love.
