Sometimes my character does not do a thing. You could lock them in a room with torture before they even conceive of doing that thing. And sometimes I make them do it anyway, because it's an amusing vision. That's if I do it on purpose.

And if you do a lot of fic in the universe already, sometimes it's nice to take a break from the canon writing and explore your favourites in other worlds. Even if it's a 'go left' other world. You're expanding the canon, not leaving it behind.
