Apparently I can only be interested in one thing at a time

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the billionth time I've watched myself drifting away from fandoms and groups that give me a lot of joy, solely because I've gotten hooked on something else and can't seem to maintain my interest in the other thing anymore no matter how obsessed I was with it. :/ I figure my one-track mind might be connected to said obsessive tendencies (like maybe I care so much about the new fandom that I have no more energy left for caring about the old one?), and both are pretty bothersome traits that I wish I didn't have...

I don't think it's an uncommon trait. I know I am definitely a mono-fandom obsession type of person. I can dabble, but I always focus on one big thing at a time. Same for real life hobbies, it takes over and I focus all about that one new thing.

That's not too weird. And really, there's only so much time in the day to spend on fandom, so getting into a new fandom almost necessarily entails spending less time on other ones (unless you're instead spending less time on other areas of your life, which is also often not desirable).

I usually have one fandom I'm really into and a couple others that I'm on the periphery of at any given time.

I'm the same way. I can enjoy other things and I might reblog stuff from them, but I will really only actively create content and engage in meta from one core fandom at a time, and then one day I will basically forget it exists and move on.

I'm also like this and I'll echo the 'it's not uncommon' comment above. I'll still pay attention to other fandoms, just not so closely.

You are not alone, Anon, I'm the same way.

This is me. Whenever I feel myself loving a character or new show, "This too shall pass" is always in the back of my mind.
