What the heck does this have to do with Morocco? Or real life history? We're discussing a fantasy series. If you think it's total accident that they were all cast dark-skinned, you are seriously delusional.

I thought it was dumb in the books, too.

The scene was filmed in Morocco, so most of the people who answered the call for extras were...Moroccan. And whatcha gonna do then, tell them they can't be in the show because of the color of their skin?

I notice that you chose to ignore the bit about white people being sold into slavery in that region of the world. Perhaps you choose to miss things that don't fit into your perception of history.

I've done extra work for years. If the extras casting people weren't told to hire a specific type, I guarantee you there would be a LOT more paler skinned extras. They would find them.

Pretty sure the casting is intentional.

That depends on the location that's been chosen for filming. If the location happens to have a lot of dark-skinned people living in it, then the extras are most likely going to be dark-skinned.

If you were doing location shoot in my country, I doubt you'd be able to drum up a dozen white guys even if you wanted to.

and they just chose to cast it in an area with a lot of dark skinned people for no reason? Why couldn't they have cast it IDK, in Sweden?

The show is made BY Americans and the books written by an American author so I think applying American sociological issues for criticism is fair here.

No the main reason is because it's set in a hot desert, ffs!! So they filmed in one in Morocco and employed local crew and extras. Probably because they got a nice big tax break from the Moroccan government for doing so. It's the very same reason why they film in Northern Ireland and Iceland and Croatia and employ crew and extras in those places too. It's because the scenery matches and there are government incentives, so it makes economic sense to do so.

Are you suggesting, in all seriousness, that several hundred lighter skinned extras should be hired and flown in for that scene to satisfy simplistic notions of US college kid social justice? God almighty, you lot are awfully provincial sometimes. You really don't see further than the edge of your tumblr tag. Not everything is about your Sociology 101 course. It's about a huge production like this being affordable to make and has the benefit of helping countries outside of the US having some sort of sustainable film industry.

...we don't have any hot deserts here in the U.S.? I thought a lot of desert movie scenes were shot in places like Arizona and New Mexico.

I'm not "here" in the US, but this bit of GOT also requires a coastline and fortifications, all of which Morocco can provide without the need to shift location or build massive sets. GOT is an international production, shot across several countries, none of which are the USA for reasons of appropriate scenery and economics - many countries give tax incentives for shooting film and TV in their territory.

So, it's an international production, with international investors, a predominantly non-American cast and it's set in fantasy-land. Why, simply because HBO is a US company and it's in English, should it be shot in the US? It's shown all over the world. The UK gets it simultaneously with the USA and other countries very shortly after.

I don't actually have a problem with it, I was just wondering why a desert scene was mentioned as a reason it couldn't be shot in the U.S. Thanks for breaking it down in detail.

No probs. Hope I didn't sound too snotty.

There are some posters hell-bent on believing that it was shot in Morocco on purpose so that this one scene could have Moroccan extras being subservient to the very white character of Dany. They're not taking any of the practical considerations of how a large, multi-location production actually works into account at all.

Not at all! Yeah, this seems to be one of those times where intent and consequences are being confused as the same thing. On the very slim chance that that scene's unfortunate connotations were intentional, considering the unhappy consequences of Dany's actions in the books, it was always meant to be subverted. Dany's not the savior that one moment pretends she is.

I'm not saying that there needs to be white slaves (I don't personally care, either way), but productions will select certain people to fly to location to be featured background. This is not an unusual practice, though it depends on the budget.

Um, they chose to cast in Morocco as they filmed on location there.

Flying in a bunch of extras from Sweden wouldn't have made any sense at all, least of all financially. And if they were posting casting information for only white people there would most likely be something akin to the casting of Katniss as I believe that, except for the Valyrians, most people on Essos have darker skin (though I might be wrong about this as I haven't gotten this far in the books and this is based on what I think other people have said)
