The first one is direct and to the point, which I feel is good for a shorter work when you're going for something more succinct.

The second carries a weight to it and a kind of portent that allows a reader to get invested, but gives you a lot of space with how much you want to reveal right away, which I feel works well for novels. It also immediately provokes questions, most obviously: "What happened in Nepal?", but also "Why is Nepal important?", "Who was in Nepal?", and (possibly for some people) "Where the hell is Nepal?"

Hmm, you actually hit upon why I used those lines. I like you. Yeah, the first I needed to get the point quickly whereas the second I had to draw shit out.

Unfortunately, due to just how things went down the first ended up longer. Oh well.

If there's something I've noticed it's that writers (decent ones anyway) tend to think the same way about writing. ;)
