I didn't think so, either, until I ran into people saying the first book's writing was the worst they had ever seen ever. Like, really, I thought the writing was mediocre at worst, the truly incoherent published books I've read in my day would make heads explode, apparently.

"Mediocre" is the word I'd use for it, yeah. Entertaining without being enthralling or deep or anything like that.

The first time I read them was in high school, and I thought they were pretty good. I didn't have much of a reference point and didn't realize all the problems they had. This might be because I had literally zero relation at all to Bella's character (and I also had my own irl romance which was so, do different from hers) so all of that just made her relationship into a Totally Foreign Entity, so it didn't occur to me to think about what might have been wrong with it. (I thought Jacob was a creep though even the first time I read it.)
