Why me and why now?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I never had trapped wind in my life before this Christmas. I've had at least nine attacks of it since then. Why, oh god, it's so painful!

Get some soda. Chug it and burp the excess gas out. Also medicine like Gax-X helps.

I take these Wind-Eze tablets and that settles it down fine, but thanks. That sounds cheaper! It was just starting to subside as I posted my last comment, I just hate that this is now apparently a thing that is going to keep happening to me. Getting older is horrible, kids. Don't do it!

DA

Funny thing, but I used to have this problem all the time, before I hit double digits in age.

Nooooooooo don't tell me this arthritis sucks bad enough.

This tip never worked for me because I just can't force a burp :(

Yoga helps with digestion. Look up some yoga poses and try it for half an hour.

Thank you. Is that something that would help in the moment, or something I should be doing regularly to stave off problems?

I found it helped pretty quickly, but if this is a recurring problem then doing regularly might be a good idea.

Dairy-free diet. The key is reading labels like you have OCD because dairy products are in everything. Also look for the constituents of dairy, like whey, casein, and lactose (those are the big three). Buy lactose-free whenever you can. Lactaid tablets before you eat will eliminate the label-reading, but can be hard to remember.

You might want to ask your doctor to refer you for a potential bowel obstruction, as well. Nine times suggests there's something just not right. Not something you want to play around with, as it can be potentially very unpleasant.

Oh god, no, my cheese. I have been considering seeing my doctor about it, but about two months ago I had trapped wind every day for four days and he just told me to go to the pharmacy and find something to deal with it :(

Keep a food diary and track your incidents alongside. See if anything matches up. Hint: it could be dairy.

The only dairy I've had in the last ten hours was eight chocolates and a cup of tea. If that's enough dairy to trigger wind, I might just cry. But the food diary sounds like a good idea, thanks

It could be. I know someone who eats half of the bottom part of a cheese bagel (the part without the cheese melted on it), and still gets lactose intolerance reactions. Now I don't know how much that is compared to what you eat, but it's the smallest amount I've ever seen a reaction to.

I second this suggestion. (It could also be gluten, or a combination of things.)

Because a wayward wind sprite sought refuge up your anus to keep warm during the winter, and is now stuck there.

Luckily? I have the stomach kind of trapped wind, not the other kind. This particular sprite is lurking rather higher up.

A lot of people have mentioned lactose intolerance, but it could also be IBS. Worth looking into.

Oh, this is all terribly depressing. Thank you!

Re: Why me and why now?

Adding to the above, it could also gluten intolerance. I'd recommend trying an elimination diet for dairy and/or gluten for a couple weeks to see if it helps.

I'm both dairy- and gluten-intolerant. It seemed overwhelming at first, but I got used to it. It's not too bad, and there are decent substitutes for most everything these days.

Have you made any changes in your diet or started taking any new medication?

What is your diet like in general? Where is your pain located?

My roommate got this problem a few years ago. The reason appears to be some sort of food intolerance. She got a whole list of food items that were out of limits, but she got it almost entirely under control simply by cutting her daily breakfast muesly with bananas out of her diet. It's not the muesli or even milk as such, she can still have that in smaller quantities. It seems to be the combination of milk+banana that's starting some strange chemical reaction.

It can't hurt to experiment with your food, see if you react badly to some.
