Here's a secret. Everyone feels dumb from time to time. Except people who are way to full of themselves. And no one likes those people.

Meanwhile, to make yourself feel better just try to build up on what you know little by little with books, classes, trips to museum, hanging out with people, watching interesting movies/video, basically living. You are never to old to do that.

Also, wiki is your friend. Don't get a reference? Wiki it and fake it until you make it.

Adding to this, if you want to "know" classic literature so that you can feel smarter, but don't actually have the patience for them, just read through Spark Notes and/or Cliffsnotes. Just read like one a day or something and over time you'll build up enough knowledge to full most people outside of actual literature students (and hell, maybe even them too). :P
