Saving webpages

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
With the pending closure and disappearance of TWOP I'm looking for ways to save some recaps. Right now I'm copying text from a page, pasting into a doc, going to the next page of the recap, lather rinse repeat.

This could vet massively time consuming - not to mention spoilery - when I get to a certain fandom. So, I just have basic Firefox, and I want to know if going file -> save on individual pages will give me something I can look at long after TWOP goes away, or if its still somehow linked to whatever is on (or not on) the web.

You could always check to see if the web archive has them archived.

Save a page (as HTML only usually suffices - saving the complete webpage will save all pictures as well but it will eat up drive space), clear your browser cache via Tools > Options, go offline, and open up the saved file. If it is readable, odds are good you'll still be able to read it in the future.

If you have Greasemonkey installed, there's a script you can download that makes the recaps show up on a single page. It makes the copy/paste method a little quicker (I've been using it myself for selected recaps, though it's still going to take a while...I've got most of the House recaps I want saved, next on to Buffy and Angel...).

I don't have greasemonkey, but I guess if so many people use it, it can't be a computer killer. Do you know what script it is you have?

I've been using this one. It adds a link at the bottom of the page where the page numbers are that says "view as single page" and when you click that it puts everything on one page. For some older recaps I've noticed it sometimes doesn't seem to work but that seems to be a weird site issue -- like, the script will only give me the first three pages so I'll click to page four and nothing will load, but jumping to page five continues the recap from where it left off and you just click 'view as one page' again and it'll give you the rest.
