Oh please. If people can ship characters that look like the ones Oda draws in One Piece, they can ship anything, "pandering" or not.

Lots of "fan-pandering" shows bomb. Maybe Free! didn't bomb because of the hot bishounen bodies, but it had something more to offer. It certainly turned out to be better than I'd expected.

FWIW, I plan on watching Ping Pong, too. There seems to be several interesting anime coming up.

Oda's not that bad at drawing attractive characters. You should have used someone like Nobuyuki Fukumoto to make your point. He's got a decent sized fandom in Japan and he absolutely sucks at drawing. His female characters are horrifying.

Free didn't bomb because it's a Kyoani show, and for some reason theirs shows have a lot of fans.

But Free's one of their better selling shows, though. Not K-On or Haruhi levels, but still decent.

Kyoani has a following, yeah, but just the of fact that they made a show doesn't mean it's gonna be widely successful. Nichijou and KnK are pretty good examples of that.

A bunch of their shows had pretty bad sales though.

That goes for pretty much any anime company, though. Kyoani has had better sales than most other companies.

I don't get why it can't be full of fanservice AND still have a nice theme--Free! certainly managed it nicely with lots of amazing animation as far as the swimming scenes went, hot bods for the fangirls, and really moving character development and friendship themes as well.
