We have bears where I live. We have rules about how to store trash so it doesn't attract bears. Every few years someone doesn't do what they're supposed to and a bear will wander into our neighborhood. Sometimes the bear kills a dog that's outside, sometimes it just scares us all half to death and then animal control lures it away. And then no one neglects to do what they're supposed to with their trash for the next few years.

Real life examples of consequences are proven to discourage people from making decisions that lead to them. Even sexual assault.

Being all "IF YOU GET ATTACKED, IT'S YOUR FAULT" is still not the way to fucking inform people to be on their guard, dickhead. Plenty of people get attacked or sexually assaulted by doing nothing to bring it upon themselves. Fuck, doing something as mundane as grocery shopping can result in sexual assault, whose fucking fault is it then?

not PP but CONTEXT!
People get attacked by bears while harmlessly taking a walk in the forest. Nobody tells them it's their fault. But if people ... dunno ... camp out and leave food lying around and a bear attacks them, well ...
BUT nobody would speak of victim blaming here, right? because you just can't go point a finger at a bear and say OMG you evil!
Saying the victim is partially responsible does not relativize the deed, but it does have an educational effect.

...I'm not sure that's the case, or else harsh sentencing would be more of a deterrent to people committing crimes.

I suppose I don't think there's any utilitarian purpose to pointing out that someone making less stupid decisions wouldn't have been victimized in these particular cases, I just object to people denying the blindingly obvious. Like, don't rub it in with the victims, just get them help, and don't use it to excuse the offenders, just punish them, but by all means tell other people "Don't do these stupid things."

The point is: men aren't bears. They are supposedly sentient. And shouldn't be kissing 14 year olds no matter where they are.
