I think this answer is interesting! "Opting out" this way didn't even occur to me. If everyone ended up with this ability, someone who chooses both to know and to reveal little could be rare and intriguing (heaven knows it's rare enough already in some online circles).

Ah, and here I though it was a really boring answer, so thanks for making me sound interesting. :D

I do value privacy a lot - and as a concept, not just my own - so maybe that's why I couldn't think of much that I'd want to broadcast to or know instantly about everyone I meet. I've actually gotten mad at people before for telling me other people's personal secrets when I didn't think anyone but the person whose secret it is had a right to be telling me. So I wouldn't want to accidentally telepathically know something that someone was trying to keep private.
