OP, I assure you you're not dumb. It depends heavily on the fandom and what people's interests are outside that fandom, too. In my fandoms people are perfectly happy to consider the fandom on its own merits and I've had some amazing discussions without linking to outside media, and let me tell you that none of us are idiots.

Enjoy fandom and don't get hung up about others judging you: they'll hardly notice as long as you enjoy the canon/fic/fanart/whatever.
