If you're up for it, it's definitely worth a shot. And if things don't work out or aren't fun, you can always go back to your lurker ways.

Good luck, nonny!

Yeah, I'd say give it a try. I'm not a very sociable person, but lately I've had some awesome fandom interactions on f!s, tumblr, and ao3. Granted, it may have something to do with my fandoms being tiny cozy places, but still, I think there are many people out there worth talking to.

Chiming in as another "go for it!" vote. There are assholes out there who can make things unpleasant but there are a lot more people who make it worth it than you would think from the way people talk. I need to remind myself of this sometimes too.

I'd much rather talk about what I'm watching currently (mostly Trek and English mysteries), what I'm reading (Mockingjay, Rupetta, and Rat Queens) or what I'm playing (Shadowrun Returns, with some WoW, Old Republic, and Path of Exile).

You might as well go for it anon, but be prepared for success or failure. I've had such shit online friends lately that I've kind of backed off from putting too much of myself out there.

This is basically what I do

For all that I apparently come off as confrontational to a lot of people in fandom, there really isn't all that much that I don't get myself into. It is possible to enjoy fandom without getting mired into wank - it's just difficult, because all it takes is one or two badly thought out comments on an issue that you should ignore but just can't because it means that much to you, and you will get sucked in. If you can do that, though, you'll be able to enjoy fandom with minimal wank just fine.

There's probably going to be confrontation no matter what, but if you are the one diving into the fray instead of cowering away from it, then it's a lot more manageable and may very well even be enjoyable in its own right. :)
