It's a Doctor Who AU of a Victorian Sherlock AU... AUs all the way down.

The Doctor Who AU of a Victorian Sherlock Holmes AU of a modern Sherlock Holmes AU.

My brain hurts.

Plus, with a stretch, you can claim that Sherlock Holmes itself was a London AU of Poe's C. Auguste Dupin stories.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
... that's too much of a stretch for me. The works have similarities of theme and characters, but that doesn't make them AU, surely?

I get a weirdly satisfying sense of irritation out of these things. They irritate me, but I like being irritated by them. It's this moment when someone displays such ignorance that it's no longer a bad thing.

(by the way, I'm not even a fan of DW, but this is some excellent fanart).

People who treat BBC Sherlock as though it's interchangeable with ACD canon need to be slapped upside the head. Repeatedly.

My pet peeve is when somebody goes all "look how many ACD references there are!". Well, yes, there are many. But none of them make sense or tie the series to the books in any meaningful way. Saying that they make the series closer to the original canon is like calling a video porn because every once in a while a random guy appears and shouts "dick!".

LOL so much this.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
IA. In Sherlock, allusions are thrown in haphazardly and indiscriminately. There's not much thought behind any of them, it's like sprinkling oregano and basil over Chef Boyardee ravioli to try and trick people into thinking they're eating Italian food.

this is best analogy for understanding what is wrong with Sherlock; thank you for this gift.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's elitist and stick up the ass and HDU criticise pwecious Benny and his perfectness...

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Because Tumblr, OP. That's all you need to know. Tumblr is the sole reason that series 3 was such unwatchable dreck, too.

Oh my god, that fanart is great.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if it really makes you want to scream then, yes, I'd say you're taking it way to seriously.

But I can understand being miffed that the real canon has been replaced by a pale imitation to a lot of people. Especially since it's not like the canon is obscure.

Well, to be fair, that furniture setup is identical to the set used on Sherlock, as best as my memory informs. Sherlock also dresses exactly like that on the show. Doesn't seem unreasonable to assume its a reference to that, considering that Daleks are also modern and also from the BBC.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's not the placement of furniture that makes it iconically ACD, though. It's the fact that the furniture is not modern and clearly not BBC Sherlock: candelabra on the mantel, coal scuttle on the hearth, leather wingback chairs instead of John's squashy stuffed chair and Sherlock's leather/chrome modern chair. Also, John does not wear a bowler, bowtie and jacket, and Sherlock might wear a deerstalker for teh lulz, but he most certainly does not go around in a patched coat, pipe and magnifying glass.

So, uh no. That fanart has very little in common with the Sherlock version of Baker Street, nearly all the things in it heavily reference the Victorian setting.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't want to scream, but I did see this post and find it irritating. Why not distinguish between actors and characters? What do the actors have to do with it???

Silly tumblr. At least the fanart is amusing.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
The perfectionist in me is in pain. And I'm not even in these fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I cannot even understand what this secret is about? You don't mind crossovers of BBC Sherlock and Doctor Who, but you object to other Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who crossovers? I don't get it.

Or is it that you object to the mislabeling or incorrect tags used? You are enraged because this was tagged BBC Sherlock (which is indeed not the case)?

If your problem is with misuse of tags, then join the club, but you need to learn to relax: it's irritating, true, but not the end of the world... Hey, some would say that's the beauty and the agony of Tumblr in a nutshell! :D
