well, Cable's shiny bits were originally a techno-organic virus, but he learned to control it, and there was lots of time travel involved, so their origin eventually changed... uh. yeah. marvel.

Clearly you are not a big Marvel comics fan? Maybe you are only familiar with the movies? Not that there's anything wrong with that! :D

Because actually, no, not at all: Cable's metal bits are organic, originally the result of a virus contracted as a baby, the 'techno-organic' virus, which couldn't be eradicated by modern science and which was threatening to take over his whole body and kill him. Eventually, after lots of complex time traveling timey-wimey stuff that would take too long to get into at this juncture, his mutant powers (mostly telekinesis and mind reading) got the infection under control. Mostly. As a result, the amount of 'metal' on his body varies greatly, from just the left half to most of his body. I am skipping lots of details about his parents, mutant heritage, parallel universes and personal history but he is mostly associated with the X-Men subset of the Marvel universe. And Deadpool.


** Lots of Captain America SPOILERS **

The Winter Soldier, on the other hand, is a fairly recently resurrected classic 'Golden Age' character, who seems to have acquired a bionic arm in the meantime (The 2005 Brubaker storyline which re-introduced him is one of the best Captain America stories in my opinion and you should read it!) But apart from said bionic arm, he is a completely normal human being as he did not even get the Super Soldier serum that Captain America did: he is just a superbly trained athlete in peak physical condition with no super powers at all.

Despite the recent Captain America movie which brought him to pro-eminence, the Winter Soldier is a fairly recent addition to the Marvel pantheon (2005. Or 1940, depending on how you look at it I guess), whereas Cable has been around for nearly a quarter of a century, since 1986 or 1990, again depending on how you look at it!

PS: Deadpool was first introduced in 1991 when attacking Cable in X-Factor (or was it New Mutants?) so his character is Cable's contemporary of sorts.

PPS: Cable & Deadpool are the best, funniest, the most stupid, silly and crazy OTP ever! They even shared a title for 50 issues: if that is not proof of their slashability, I don't know what is!

I tried to get into comics, but honestly I have never known when to start. And I don't really understand how universes and such work. And I don't get the idea of paying for a tiny part of the story issue at a time. D:

The only comic I have read was The Walking Dead and I bought the compendiums.

That's totally understandable! As a long-time Marvel comicbook fan, I spent far too much of my time and money since my teenage years to wish it on anyone else. But of course the downside is that you miss some stunning storylines.

However, in the case of Deadpool (including his history with Cable), it is fairly easy to get the whole shebang in readable format on your computer as there are a lot of online resources (google for Deadpool cbr or cbz files and download CDisplayEx or its Mac equivalent) which make the complete collection available for free. A lot of comic book store owners make those available so people can get hooked on a character and eventually purchase the graphic novel collections: this is how is works nowadays, mostly.

Glad to help, it sounds like a great idea as long as you're not on company time! :)

However I have not found a good comics reader for my own Kindle and I have been reduced to moving my collection to pdf: comics in pdf format are perfect for my 8.9" screen, but most of my collection is in cbr/cbz files, so that's a bummer.

Unless... do you have any rec for a good free cbr reader on the Kindle?

Okay, I forgot what I did to read CBR files on my kindle but now I remember. I would use Calibre (a free program) and convert the CBR files to MOBI files (which can be read on a kindle). I think I tried PDF but MOBI looks better overall.

I did try some apps that would read CBR but they were all terrible. :|

Is the order the comics are in (in the torrent), the order to read them in?

Oh, I'll try that, thank you so much... I am a big fan of Calibre, but I never thought of trying the mobi format for comics, even though it's what I use for books! And yes, all the cbr apps are terrible which is why I avoid them too. I suspect it's because they are not really cbr reading apps as much as targeted at people who want to buy/subscribe to current comics.

About order, the naming convention (the filename) indeed indicates the reading order and complete collections usually break down whole runs in sub-folders as appropriate. These are can often be numbered so you know in which order you should read these series.

Deadpool by himself is often a fun read, but the whole madcap and crazy Cable & Deadpool 50-issues run was the pinnacle of both characters in my opinion.
