Eh, depends on where you live, I think. In my experience, CostCo is definitely upper crust in cities, but tends to 'sink' towards lower middle class as you get out to the suburbs, and then goes 'back up' in rural areas.

It's mostly to do with how you're poor. If you are 'poor' by virtue of having a low salary and knowing how much you'll have next month, even if it's not much, that's very different than being poor as in living in paycheck-to-paycheck and not even knowing if you'll have a job next month, letalone income...yeah, you're going to be less inclined to burn money now to save money later.
