How would you track down a fanfic you've lost the link to?

[personal profile] feotakahari 2014-03-30 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to prove to myself that I didn't just dream this, but I don't remember the title or the author. I found it on FIMfiction, and I remember it was an all-OC story, but the All-OCs group is pretty disorganized, and it's not in any of the more specific groups that seem relevant (like the inflation group.) I don't want to make this a post about this specific fic, since it's unlikely anyone here has read it, so I'll just make it a general question: have you ever list the link to a fic, and if so, how did you find it again?

Just in case, I'll describe the fic in question one post down.

... Tbh, is go to the site I read it on and dig for it... But that isn't fast or particularly easy so I'd have to *really* want to find it before doing that.

Search through the archives using whatever I can remember about it, or Google around for terms relating to it. I can't think of any better way to do it. It does take a while and it's very trial-and-error, repetitive, dull - but I have had some luck in the past.

Trigger warning: molestation(?)

This MLP fic begins with a young foal and a traveling party planner, the latter widely respected. (I should note that they're both OCs--Pinkie Pie isn't even mentioned until late in the fic.) The party planner gets the foal alone in a room and . . . inflates her like a balloon.

Seriously.

It's actually really disturbing--the party planner talks about how much she loves giving foals her gift, and the foal feels humiliated and helpless, and afterwards the party planner tells the foal that no one will believe her . . . I had the disturbing suspicion that the author was paralleling personal experience.

The bulk of the fic takes place after the foal has grown and become a party planner herself, with the same cutie mark and the same urges. It swings back and forth between an adventure story in which she faces off against pirates and a frank psychological portrait of someone slowly losing her marbles.

I am convinced I actually read this fic before my computer died and I lost all my links, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere. I just want to prove that it really exists.

I gave up and searched FIMfiction for "balloon," and eventually, it turned up. This is a real fic, you guys!

Try and retrace my steps generally. I tend to find things by rec lists or kink meme so it generally involves a lot of looking through lists. Google is also pretty helpful.

But I'm still looking for a drake and Josh threesome fic I lost in one of ffn's purges of all mature fics so I suppose I'm not the best person to ask

There aren't any ficfinder communities in your fandom?

I'd never heard the term "ficfinder" before this. A quick Google search reveals nothing for my fandom, and Fanlore's list of finders doesn't have one for MLP. http://fanlore.org/wiki/List_of_Finder_Communities

At least I can try some of the general ones. Thanks!

I'm really good at remembering exact quotes, and that's the best way to find fics, I've found. Search for the quote in Google ("quote"), possibly adding the word fic to it ("quote" 'fic') and that usually works for me.
