But there are other countries that have "states" in the name, so that wouldn't quite work.

"United Statesian" wouldn't work, either, because Mexico is technically the United States of Mexico (this, incidentally, is why I always get annoyed with people who are like "we should be United Statesians").

I honestly think "American" works just fine, since no other country has "America" in its name.

but do you at least understand why someone would want to find an alternative, and not treat the idea as some bizarre and deeply offensive presumption or something
