[True Detective]

I was surprised by how attractive he was in that series. (I'd vote pre-facial hair, personally.) I'd never, ever found him attractive before. I'd even found it mystifying but on that show, it just works for me.

Yeah, I've never been into him OR impressed by him as an actor, but young Cole is incredibly hot. I wasn't so much into the old, skeevy version, though I was totally rooting for him and Marty to ride off into the sunset together.

Ooo, it has two timelines (not the best word, but hopefully you know what I mean)? I've been wanting to see it, but it doesn't seem like it's ever gonna air in my country.

So tell me, fellow FS people, is it worth seeing?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-01 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
If you don't mind depressing stuff and violence. It's well made. It was too dark for me right now so I only really saw bits and pieces.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-04-01 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in a pretty crappy place myself, so I don't really mind a little more of the same -- but thank you for the warning!

I've actually heard a lot of people talk about McConaughey's character as an effective portrayal of someone dealing with depression (i'm not sure that's what's INTENDED but it's definitely created that reaction, and it seems like a lot of people who have been through that connected to the character), and there's explicit discussion of suicidal thoughts. I don't know if that weighs for or against wanting to watch it but I wanted to specify that 'depressing' applies here in a very specific sense.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-04-02 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for specifying, that's really thoughtful and kind of you.

(For me, it counts in favor of watching it. Maybe it's strange, but sometimes it helps to watch things like that when I'm feeling low myself. If I'm in a good space, however, I usually try to avoid it! So seriously, thank you once again for the warning.)

No problem, I know how it is. I hope you like the show -- I found it very moving and well done, though not without flaws.

If you're into really moody police procedurals and/or stories about male friendship, I recommend it. If you need interesting, varied female characters in your fiction, though, I'd skip it.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-04-01 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Dunno about the first (does Miami Vice count? *laughs*), but I certainly love the latter. Good female characters would be a definite plus, of course, but it's not a deal breaker for me. Thank you so much for the input!

The central relationship between the partners is really fascinating, and for me that was the main draw. Definitely heed the warnings about violence and dark/disturbing content (though it's more DISCUSSION and implication of those things than actual images on screen), but it's not extreme by the standards of R-rated movies or cable drama.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-04-02 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like I'll definitely enjoy it -- for me, the most important thing in a series is the characters and their relationship. Plot and such is important too, don't get me wrong, but I have to connect with and care for them (hope that makes sense).

I have no problem with most violence/disturbing content/gore/etc. so no worries there. Thanks yet again!

You won't be disappointed. Ultimately, "True Detective" is a show about two things: story-telling (and the stories we tell ourselves) and the relationship between the two main characters. Honestly, I've never seen anything quite like this show.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's one of the best things that's ever been on TV. It's good in a very literary way -- incredible writing, but it's able to achieve more in the medium of television than it could as a book. The acting, writing, directing, cinematography, and design are all amazing.

And everyone talks about McConaughey's acting, which is certainly incredible -- I didn't care a whit about him before this show, btw -- but Woody Harrelson is also amazing. The fact that his character, Marty, wasn't overwhelmed by McConaughey's darker, more dramatic Rust just shows what a great job he did.

And did I mention the music? Stellar. If you like buddy cop shows/mysteries tinged with a bit of cosmic horror, you should see this.

The DVDs are due out in June, btw.

'95 and Crash all the way for me.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Crash was the most fuckable version, agreed.

I don't watch this show, but please, please tell me this is a subtle stab at Bronies

Considering the stuff that it's implied this dude is up to, I'm pretty sure it is. Not sure the writer put it in there, but I suspect at least someone in design or costuming had themselves a good laugh over this.

I couldn't decide on which, either. But I spent the whole series wishing Woody Harrelson would spit out whatever was in his mouth, haha.
