I'm not that anon, but I don't think kyoani really put that much thought into the characters. Most of them fall under typical anime tropes and they were probably trying to make Haru a 'kuudere'.

If he was a real person I'd say he was autistic and I personally headcanon him to be autistic, but I'm going to say that was the intention with his characterization.

Especially since kyoani characters are usually anime tropes and 'moe' rather than attempting realistic portrayals of people.

Oh yeah, fair enough. I doubt he was designed to be autistic. I feel like Kyoani put a bit more effort in to their characterisation for Free than they have with some previous shows though. Not to say they're particularly complex or realistic, but they're not completely standard anime tropes. Like Yui is a pretty standard moe character, and so is Ritsu, but Nagisa is more like Ritsu and Yui put together. Still not great, but slightly better.

I genuinely think Rei is a great character though, which is especially surprising considering he wasn't in the LN. I can't think of many other characters that are too similar to him (every time I see him compared to another character it usually involves missing out huge chunks of his personality). He had noticeable, natural development as the series progressed as well.
