Re: major character deaths

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
As a diehard fan of the show ... I kind of agree with this? Some of the deaths were good and had impact, but when I'm thinking idly back there's only one death scene in the whole three seasons that still brings the tears in a good way, and it was both early on and permanent. It's the only death in the show that I've still not gotten over.

Although there was a death in S2 that was impressive and wrenching, and all the more so for being the death of an unapologetic, awesome villain. Again, said death was permanent (so far).

Jury's still out on the most recent death. The death itself kind of annoys me, and my fears for what it means for one character arc definitely annoy me, but the two main living characters who are grieving are breaking my heart right now, and the death does add interesting things to their arcs. Or, okay, one of their arcs. The implications for the other one are just making me nervous.

OUaT in general though has a definite problem with setting up crises and then not following through or else resolving them too quickly. They'll set up a horrible situation for seven episodes, and then resolve it five minutes into the episode after the cliffhanger. They just basically don't know how to pace things to maintain tension (after S1, at least). I tend to think the character deaths are only a facet of that larger problem?
