He was a seriously deprived kid who grew up to be a complicated arsehole, and he was the righthand man/servant of two powerful wizards who both sacrificed him for their own ends without a second thought. He sold his soul to Voldemort and then to Dumbledore; God knows what became of it. He was malicious, hated children, and overidentified with Slytherin house (even though, as far as I can tell, it did nothing but fuck him up).
He was a piece of work, no question, but every time he appears, the story gets five times more entertaining to me. And as a writer, pulling Snape out from behind the cartoonish distorting effects of Harry's POV and pondering what makes him tick is great fic fodder.
