Come on. Just stop, seriously. You're desperately trying to justify shitty behavior and coming off as one of those grasping Snapewives. There are so many examples of where he went far beyond "I need to protect my DE image"--one word, Legilimens--but you're ignoring all of that. He was a dick. A magnificent one, and awesome in the end, but he had major issues and shouldn't have been teaching children. Just stop.

Yeah, this. This is why I love him. Without his dickishness, he wouldn't have been half as interesting a character.

He was a seriously deprived kid who grew up to be a complicated arsehole, and he was the righthand man/servant of two powerful wizards who both sacrificed him for their own ends without a second thought. He sold his soul to Voldemort and then to Dumbledore; God knows what became of it. He was malicious, hated children, and overidentified with Slytherin house (even though, as far as I can tell, it did nothing but fuck him up).

He was a piece of work, no question, but every time he appears, the story gets five times more entertaining to me. And as a writer, pulling Snape out from behind the cartoonish distorting effects of Harry's POV and pondering what makes him tick is great fic fodder.
