AH is great fun. Turtledove is awesome, so is Harry Harrison. Stephan King's ghostwriter did one, too, but I haven't read it yet.

I'm into it as a genre of fiction, but I don't understand the appeal of that timeline thread-based stuff. Each to his own, of course! You can enjoy it all you like, it's just not for me.

I love alternate history, but i have a hard time finding books about it that really grab me. Most seem to be about the US Civil War, which bores me.

Might I suggest an historical fictions series? The first book is called Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh. It takes place during the Opium War and has an incredibly diverse set of characters and a well-plotted epic narrative.
