Silly hairsplitting question: So are violence and life-and-death situations both necessary? Like, a really brutal MMA competition (with no risk of death) or an epidemic story (with no violence) wouldn't work? What about a natural disaster story where the 'violence' is not inflicted by anything alive?

Either/or, but when it comes to violence I'm mostly thinking about shows where there's physical fighting, shooting at each other, and attempts to kill on a regular basis -- cop shows, crime shows, sci-fi, fantasy, that kind of thing. Doesn't need to be the main point of the show, doesn't even have to happen in every single episode or anything, just has to be a regular part of the show.
