I mean, in terms of politeness, y'know, by all means, let's hear about different views from different people. But trying to make it a religious point just seems...odd?
(Also confused, though I haven't been to the GC, but if the thread's about religion and people are sharing their views and discussing them, then why shouldn't people talk about what their faith is. DW isn't a conversation or a messageboard--you can't talk over someone or as thoroughly derail a topic. So...confused.)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)Jesus told his students to talk about it and spread it back when it was not a religion at all, not necessarily for you to keep on doing that ad nauseum...

Christianity in general is a religion that actively seeks and encourages conversion (and, historically speaking, often forced it). Not every religion is like that.

Christ told us to spread the word - but most if not all people I have ever met in my life have already heard the word. Doesn't mean I can't or shouldn't encourage others or share my beliefs in appropriate places, of course. It's a complex subject but I don't think we're required to "talk about it at every possible opportunity" - this can be counterproductive and sometimes obnoxious. Living out the faith is (imo) often the best way to "share" it in a world that is saturated with organized religion but arguably low on actual spirituality.
I agree with your overall sentiment though - if a thread is about religion in general, nothing wrong with talking about your own religion. It doesn't stop people from talking about another religion in a different sub-thread. And I think religion in general is interesting so I'd love to read/talk about other faiths, I just don't know very much about many of them, and certainly can't speak from personal experience on most of them.

I phrased that badly. When I say "Every opportunity" I don't mean "constantly"--although for some people, that is what it means. I mean specifically when it's appropriate, like when people are having an actual conversation about religion. I also don't mean for that to be preaching, because...yeah, that's usually not helpful. More like, if people are talking about what they believe and why, and the conversation is open to sharing, that it seems like the right time and place to talk about it.
OP's little "Our Lord and Savior would not be best pleased" comes off as...insincere? Because why on earth would he Not be? I haven't been to GC on this, though, so for all I know, people were being very rude about it, or shutting down any discussion that wasn't specifically about Christianity, or were generally being bad representatives. The Lord would not be "best pleased" by folks using religion as an excuse to be jerks. But just because people are...talking about it? In a thread set aside for talking about religion? It seems an odd thing to say.
