I certainly didn't think Orwell was condoning it.

But I really wanted out of the character's head.

I definitely understand. I read 1984 when I was much younger and -- more numb, I think, to certain things. If I were reading it for the first time now, the chances of me closing the book right then are pretty good. (Now I know it's there and can just skim it). It's a good book and it does a lot of unpleasant things really well, but it's grim all the way down.
