I saw both parts highlighted, yes, but I still think you're really missing the point. The emotion he feels is so strong, such a visceral reaction, precisely because he hasn't been allowed to live as a normal human being would. He has absolutely no outlet for his emotions, no freedom, no life outside of constant monitoring and fear. The attitude he expresses feels so real precisely because it's not Orwell's invention; it's a very primal human emotion...but the depth and violence of it is absolutely a product of the dystopia.

...I'm really not okay with "I hate you because I can't have sex with you", period.

Re: OP

Wow, you are bound and determined not to hear reasoned dialogue on this. There is probably a good reason for that, so I'll just step away now.

Wow, you're an asshole: a dense asshole. People do not have to be "reasoned" about things that freak them out, ffs.

Two words: Unsympathetic. Protagonist.

You're not supposed to be okay with it.

DA

Yes, and someone can understand that and still not be okay with reading it.

I'm trying to imagine telling this to my high school English teacher when we were reading it my sophomore year, and really, I can't. He'd laugh me right out of his classroom.

As well he should.

Re: OP

This viewpoint is ludicrous to me. It's like people forget that the whole CONCEPT of written works is ENTERTAINMENT. No matter how high flown, poetical, or ground-breaking, a book exists to be READ FOR ONE'S ENJOYMENT. Sometimes you just don't fucking like a book, no matter how well written it is and if you don't like it, there is no god damn reason on the face of the planet why you should have to read it.

Does the book have a message? Yes. Is it the only place in the world you will ever learn that message? No. Not by a long shot.

Re: OP

nayrt, but I think they were talking about it as though it's required reading for a high school class, which is common in the US. In which case, yeah, whether for better or for worse, "the material offends me" isn't a legitimate excuse to get out of the work assigned.

Laugh? Jeez, sorry you had such an asshole teacher. And that he molded you in his image.

You think a high school teacher should laugh his pupils out of the classroom if a book makes them uncomfortable? Really?

It's not supposed to be okay though?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
And...you're...not supposed to be. Like, you aren't supposed to read this part and think, "gosh, that Winston, he sure is charming!" You're supposed to be disturbed and disgusted.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure it's long been since established that OP knows this. That still doesn't mean they have to keep reading.

You're right, they absolutely don't.

But I don't know if the anon I responded to was actually the OP. There's a person hanging around here who's not the OP who seems to believe that the scene was an endorsement. On the off-chance that the AIRT was them...
