Starting a Podcast

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
So I've been thinking about making a podcast, the kind that follows a story. Is there an audience for more of those? I was introduced to the idea by WTNV and I'm afraid people will think I'm trying to copy it. The story I have mapped out isn't at all similar to WTNV, and I know there are other podcasts that follow stories.

If you make it interesting and market it well, there will be an audience.

There are a ton of those. They have been around since the advent of the radio. They are called radio plays/serials/series. While they are not as popular in the US these days on the radio, they are still big in the UK. (However, when they were big in the 30's and 40's in the US, they were HUGE. Like the biggest name screen actors would do them.) And currently on the internet? Oh, you can find radio serials/series for every genre you can think of. Just google it.

So, go ahead and take a stab at it without worrying about being called a copycat. The only people who may call you that are people who have only been exposed to WTNV and no other radio serials. But everyone else will be fine.

If it is an actual audio drama and not just someone telling a story, I can almost guarantee that I will listen to at least one episode, and many more if the story/style grabs me.

Although I'm not overtly familiar with radio plays I know they've existed way before WTNV, and most other people do too. (I think or at least hope.) Even if some folks believe you're trying to copy WTNV's success, I don't see why it matters; tell the story you want to!

And yes, I think if it's good there will be an audience. I'm interested, at any rate.
