It doesn't make sense, though. If men feel violent towards women who won't sleep with them outside of the dystopia - and they do, boy howdy, do they do - then what will make them stop?

This question doesn't even make sense. What exactly are you getting at?

Re: OP

I'm saying that if the dystopia was responsible, then why do men in the real world think that way?

HINT: it's because it's something Orwell actually believes. His answer to the problem isn't making men stop hating women, it's increasing women's sexual availability.

HINT: Read the comment upthread. Of course it's not something made up for the dystopia.

DOUBLE HINT: Orwell wasn't trying to write a book about how to solve the problem of men hating women...you're missing the point as badly as OP.

They're missing the point on purpose. It's pretty obvious by now.

It's radfem anon back again. Their are deliberately stirring shit up.

HINT: You can write about something that's awful while not believing in it yourself.

And, honestly, Orwell wouldn't have portrayed Winston's feelings as disturbing if he actually believed that they were legitimate.

It makes perfect sense to me for it to be something magnified by the dystopia.

I think anon means that even in a sexually permissive, non-dystopian society, some men still harbor violent thoughts towards women who are unavailable to them sexually, and that is scary and disturbing. Saying "It's just because of the oppressive dystopia" isn't much comfort.

Huh. This was meant to be a reply to the comment replying to the comment I replied to.

I think it's more that the dystopia can magnify those feelings, and in doing so, seizes upon them as a way to deepen the divisions between human beings. It is the supreme irony that in the ultimate collectivist dystopia invented, each person is atomized to the point where the ideal is for them to not even engage their brains when they talk to one another, but instead mindlessly repeat acceptable slogans in the name of serving Big Brother.

tl;dr: The violent thoughts Winston has are regarded in 1984-world by the ruling powers as a feature, not a bug, because they keep him from being able to connect to Julia as a human being.
