A question regarding fanworks, somewhat inspired by secret #11

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
My question for F!S is: Have you ever come across a story or fanwork of any sort that was out of your usual fandom/genre but was of such good quality that you've never quite forgotten it? Will you share it?

Although I have never been involved in any comic book fandoms, one of the most memorable stories I came across was, in fact, one based on Doc Ock. It really impressed me. The story "Freak Like Me" (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1696581/1/Freak-Like-Me) is still on my favorites, even after a decade.

Yes, and um. No - mainly because it's something that really squicks most people [hell, this is only time it hasn't squicked me!]

Definitely. Sometimes I will search via recs or by theme and will be interested enough in the summary to check out a genre or fandom I never would have considered. This happens a lot with some of my favorite reccers I follow. I know they have good taste and have loved stuff in our mutual fandom enough to trust their judgement and check out stuff for new fandoms.

Drawing a blank on specific fics, but I'll come back if any come to mind!

There was an ABO fic that was recced to be the other day, and even though I usually NOPE my way out of those, and it wasn't in a pairing I usually ship, I gave it a try. It was pretty good.

it's a destiel fic: http://archiveofourown.org/works/978693

Hockey RPS set in a universe with telepathic bonding. I'm uninterested in sports fandom, indifferent to the trope, and actively dislike fic starring real people, but somehow that one story really clicked for me.

I just wish I could find it again.

I briefly tried reading Princess Tutu fanfics. Most of them seemed like they took away from the original, lessening or invalidating aspects of it, but This Pendent Heart basically worked as a third season, continuing the original's style while asking questions that went unaddressed the first time around. https://sites.google.com/site/thispendentheart/

In a mad and ever-changing world, my hatred of Firefly is as constant as the North Star. And yet the Horseshoe Nails series are the fics out of all my fandoms that I go back to for a reread the most often.
