As full of shit as he often is, Willis had a point here.

Scott Lobdell has a lot to answer for. He may possibly be the worst writer at DC right now.

It was the Batwoman gay-wedding cancellation that got me. I mean, fuck, just at the time the world was rolling back anti-gay marriage laws DC came out and cancelled a gay couple's wedding. And for why, I hear you cry? Because some idiot had the idea that superheroes couldn't be married, because they all had to be lonely vigilantes holding back the night. That doesn't even fit with the theme of all the Bat-family, never mind the rest of DC's stable but they went ahead and enacted it anyway. Stupid, bigoted, and just plain disrespectful to the readers who'd invested so much time and money buying comics leading up to that. DC won't get a penny from me until it stops screwing over its readers.

Also, I'd like DC to un-cancel Doomlord (since they apparently now own the rights to the character, somehow).

The Batwoman thing was so fucking infuriating.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
is that from an actual comic?

Yes. Booster Gold Volume 2 #32.

On the subject of Booster, have they undone his removal from existence yet? They had a fun and lively character, so naturally DC not only killed him off but retcon'd him out of existence entirely.

Hasn't been seen since the JLI annual, no.

Wait, no -- he pops up in All Star Western #19.

I hate how DC isn't doing anything (well, at least not to my knowledge) to try to appeal to younger readers right now. And they actually used to be decent at it, with titles like Blue Beetle, Batgirl, and Teen Titans. The post-reboot series like Batgirl and Teen Titans have been horrible, and obviously intended for older readers.

Teen Titans hasn't been that great since Marv Wolfman's run... in the early 80s.

90s Young Justice, though, that's where it was at.

What's wrong with Batgirl?

John's Teen Titans might not have been that good, especially compared to Wolfman's stuff, but at least it was appealing to younger readers and could be relatively fun. I still like to re-read it occasionally.
Yes, 90s Young Justice though. I love that series.

From what I've seen of it, the current Batgirl run looks all doom and gloom and no fun. I honestly don't know anyone who actually likes it.

Haha, well I know of one person who likes it then. But it's still obviously not something that makes DC look like they have anything appealing for younger readers.

Didn't a DC exec come out and flat out say they were writing for middle aged dudes exclusively now? That isn't business strategy fated to meet with success, even I could see that.

That was Dan Didio, the co-publisher and basically the dude in charge. He's that bald asshole in the Shortpacked comic Noodles posted.

I can't stand him. What he actually means is they're writing for guys like HIM.

His decisions pulled DC out of deep water 8 years ago. But it's time for him to go.

“What’s wrong [with the comics industry]? … In the late ’70s, all the comic fans decided to get into the business. The problem is, it was a bunch of superhero fans. And an industry that had, up until that point, catered to almost every genre imaginable slowly and slowly was narrowed down and boiled down to a point where it was superhero comics, and that’s all there were.

And then they all were writing these comics for each other — not for a mass market, not for young people. And then, as they aged, the content aged to suit their needs. And the idea is, when you’re an adult, you’re supposed to turn to other forms of entertainment, maybe, or appreciate comics for what they were. But that hasn’t been the case. So now we have superheroes that rape, we have heroin addicts, we have all this kind of bullshit that’s been heaped onto these characters that were meant to entertain kids and give them a little sense of right and wrong and adventure. I think it’s so sad. And you see what the strategy has done.

… In 1972, Jimmy Olsen comics sold 200,000 copies a month, and it was canceled because that wasn’t enough to keep it going. These days, the best-selling book can barely scrape past 70,000 — never mind the worst-selling books. So let’s take a look at that strategy that’s been applied to this business. How’d it work out? Not too good. And the less people that read ‘em, the more expensive they have to be, and the more cryptic they have to be to cater to that tiny little market they’ve got. That’s what’s wrong.”

I don't think it is quite as bleak as that. The Manga books do a good job of catering to wider genres, and webcomics get phenomenal numbers of hits. It is just that the Trad comic market hasn't moved on with changes in technology or tastes or capitalized on new opportunities (hardly unique to comics though, tv has the same problem and that problem is fossilized execs). DC, and to a lesser extent Marvel and Archie (I think Archie is probably the best of the three right now for upping their game), needs to start taking risks and stop pandering to yesterday's market.

same problem is happening with anime these days.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki let audiences know how he really feels about the anime industry in a recent television interview. According to the recent retiree, anime suffers because industry staff is made up of otaku who "don't spend time watching real people" and are "humans who can't stand looking at other humans."

Miyazaki explained that animating people can only be done by those who spend time observing others, something he feels the industry lacks because it's "full of otaku."
