Have you ever watched a show...

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
and found yourself thinking "I want to like this character so, so much, but the actor/actress is so BAD it's painful to watch"?

Re: Have you ever watched a show...

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Yes I have.

But then I've also experienced the opposite. Where I really don't like the character but there is just something about the actor/actress that is so likeable I end up falling for the character anyhow.

Deanna Troi from Star Trek TNG. She is really just the loveliest, sweetest person ever. Too bad I can't wholeheartedly enjoy most of her scenes.

Re: Have you ever watched a show...

Most of the time, I think it's the writing failing and not the actress. Poor Troi always got the worst plots.

Awww, I love Deanna anyway. I just kind of rolled the bad acting into her character, like "That's just how Deanna is."

Not that I can recall, but I have once refused to watch a movie adaptation of my favorite book because one of my favourite characters was terribly, terribly cast. Like, the-director-did-not-read-a-page-of-the-book-also-this-actor-is-bad terrible.

oh no, now I'm curious. . . what was the book?

I'm sorry I'm late, I fell asleep after I read this comment! But maybe you might check in later or something so ... it was Going Postal by Terry Pratchett. Badly done movie, it didn't do justice to the book AT ALL and drastically changed some plot points so that some characters entirely lost their meaning! Charles Dance was good in it though, but the part that breaks my heart was that Drumknott was badly cast. Drumknott is such an important character and I just couldn't bear the fact that they'd do that to him :(

Natalie Dormer is ridiculously miscast as Margaery Tyrell. I think she's an all right actress in some other things, but she's so awful in this role that it just hurts to watch some times. Especially if she's onscreen with Diana frickin' Rigg, who just acts circles around her.

LBR, Diana Rigg can act circles around just about everyone.

YMMV but it was kind of like that when I finally saw Lupita Nyong'o in 12 Years a Slave. I was really looking forward to it but I was really underwhelmed by her performance (Chiwetel Ejiofor was fantastic though). She wasn't in it much either.

Yeah, I wasn't impressed either. I think the hype surrounding her performance ruined it for me. She wasn't bad but she wasn't WOW!!!!! either. She was just, "Wait, that's it? That's what everyone crowing about?"

Glory from Buffy. Wanted to like the character because 1) I like villains (they usually have the best dialog) and 2) she was god, which was unusual for that type of show. But, man, the actress was so hammy and bad. I wish anyone else could have played her.

Oh man I loved Glory because she was so over the top and hammy.

I feel this way about Jared Padalecki from SPN, to be honest. I think his character is really interesting (at least in the earlier seasons lol), but that man cannot act. He pretty much just cycles through the same three facial expressions. Whenever I read fanfic from Sam's point of view, I feel like I'm imagining an entirely different person.

For me, it's Jensen Ackles. I was watching an episode and he was crying and I was like, Is he even trying anymore or is it just like "1) deliver emo Dean line, 2) crinkle eyebrows..." going through his head while he's acting?

Not often, but Laurel Lance from Arrow. I so want to like her, as I like most female characters and I know that she is supposed to be Black Canary, which is just my thing. Except I find that I have the worst time actually watching her. I've even fast forwarded a couple of times in her scenes because I couldn't bear it anymore. And this makes me sad.

Skye from Shield.

She's gotten a lot better since the beginning of the show but I think she would still be more likable with a different actress.

I don't mind Skye, but I feel that way about Ward. He's just so wooden and expressionless.

Clara Oswald from Doctor Who. She's not a bad actress or anything, but I don't think she really tries. A lot of her dialogue could sound much more clever and interesting if she just didn't say it in the same way every time. I feel like she just reads all of her dialogue as 'cute feisty girl' with no additional thought or talent.

I feel this way about Jane Foster. I want to like her, but it felt like Natalie Portman was compiling her weekly grocery list onscreen.

Considering she tried to break her contract before Thor: TDW started filming, I'm not surprised it felt like she was phoning it in.

I had this problem with Echo on Dollhouse, and now with Paul (the sort-of would-be love interest) on Orphan Black. The actors aren't out-and-out terrible, but both of their characters go through dramatic personality/persona shifts, and they nail some of the roles that come up but whiff on others. It doesn't help that both shows have other actors knocking the same type of shifts out of the park.
