if all it takes for op to give up on a book is a disturbing passage like this one then why were they reading 1984 in the first place

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It was required reading at my school. It might have been the same for OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
It was required reading for me, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
It should be required reading for everyone.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's pretty overrated, personally.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
That's why Cliff Notes was invented, LOL.

many, many required readings are often not fully read

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I was eleven and someone gave it to me and said it was a sci-fi classic and they thought I would like it.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
At least this person thought you were capable enough of reading it.

That's better than a good majority of our US public education system right now.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
My Dad gave it to me when I was 12-13 and said I should read it. I don't believe it was required reading at my MS or HS so I was glad to have read it when I did.

I honestly cannot tell if this comment is supposed to be derisive or not.

I can hardly blame OP for not wanting to read a passage about how much a guy wishes he could rape a girl and hate her because she can't/won't have sex with him. I'm not saying I'd have done the same, but jeez.

And patting yourself on the back for being superior to the rest of the common, illiterate herd. Yeah, not impressed, sister.

While this is true, given that OP gave '1984' a go when she was 11, I'm not sure that it's the case this time, or that her inability to continue reading it could be generalized to her reading habits now.

I also think that someone who reads for reasons other than pure pleasure can still have themes or content that make them so profoundly uncomfortable that they must stop reading.

That you use F!S (a fandom secret site) to generalise what you think most people do is truly astonishing and also kind of sad.
Sorry, but you seem to be very young (early 20s or even still a teenager?) and naive on the one hand and on the other hand you come across very condescending with a need to judge. (and this attitude is so so typical for a teenager)

I hope that you will meet a lot of different people in the future (and not just here on F!S) to learn from them, to see that maybe what you think "most people do" isn't really what they do. Try talking to older people, get their perspective and learn something from their experiences.

You will see that a tiny fandom site is not the world and especially not most people.

I wish you all the best for your future and hopefully you'll grow with new experiences you'll make out of your comfort zone.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
...wow. I'm surprised that this is the first time you've ever read anything that stella_down has written on this site (and it must be, because if you had ever encountered her before, there's no way that you'd think she was a teenager lacking in life experience).

I would also like to point out that a) you're being rather condescending yourself (and attempting to extrapolate a good deal about another person's life from a single discussion on a fandom secrets site) and b) that attitude that you find so typical of teenagers is typical of a lot of adults, as well. There are people who remain petty, judgmental, condescending, and dramatic throughout the duration of their lives.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes I'm not around often, so I haven't read anything from her before (and someone mentioned she's in her mid-twenties? That's not really old)

But if someone uses this site to jump to conclusions ("what most people do" and to use your words: to attempt to extrapolate a good deal about other people's life from discussions on a fandom secrets site), I seriously think they are lacking life experience or maybe they are just petty, judgmental,...

Anyway this is exactly why I'm rarely here, the "I'm better than you" - attitude was virtually over the whole thread.
And this makes it easier to realise that I'm probably too old for this site anyway. I'll stay away.

This comment is so spot on, save for the age. I think she's around her mid-twenties and even married.
And speaking of comfort zones: she doesn't call her husband husband (or even partner etc.) because she doesn't like the words. So instead she uses the word boyfriend.
