Concrit Thread Ideas/Troll Reduction

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-04-05 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I recently brought up the idea of having a regular concrit thread (maybe every other week?) where people could post works they want some honest feedback and constructive criticism about to help improve the writing. By and far, you guys seemed to think this was a good idea, the main problem being fear of trolls.

Any tips or ideas on how to reduce or limit trolling on such a thread? Trolls largely seem to appear on threads that are already getting inflamed by people actually arguing over something, so it doesn't likely that they'd bother with this, but it can't hurt to have some back-up plans.

Also, what day of the week do you guys think might be the best one to post such a thread, to maximize number of people seeing this thread and 'available' to offer concrit while minimizing trolling? At the moment, it looks like either Wednesday or Friday would be the best bet.

Hmm, the problem is that I've seen sensitive writers call normal criticism trolling. Then if real trolls show up it will be a circus.

I don't really think there is much you can do about it other than say in the first post, "Don't do that." Which... probably won't be that effective. You could always put it under games. That way fewer people would see it but you have less of a chance for trolls.

I thought about that. My problem with just putting it in the games thread is that less people will see it - I honestly don't expect many people to be participating much to begin with, so I'm aiming for as much exposure as possible, and I'm trying to minimize the trolling to try and encourage more people to participate.

Yeah, that is the tradeoff. Maybe you could make a post advertising it above to link down below? I dunno.

The only thing I can think of is to maybe end up setting it so that it's a group [comm, forum, or otherwise people communicating] where you can have some control over who comments, as well as basically installing a third party to help keep some of the peace if someone does something wrong/someone gets offended over crit.

Even then, idk how well that'd work.

I might open an actual community one day, and if/when that happens, minimizing trolling would be pretty easy, comparatively speaking. But right now, I'm just trying to make a thread to get the idea started, in effect a panfandom writing critique thread.

I feel like the fact that some people refer to this as Fucked-Up Friday might attract trolls who might come for rape wank or something and then stick around, but I haven't actually looked at whether there are more trolls on this day. My instinct says that Wednesday would be better though.

I think I'll go with Wednesday, and maybe move it to Friday down the road if benefit of exposure seems to outweigh the cost of potential trolling. :)

Wednesday is amazing for me. Were your thoughts for, like, concrit on things that have already been posted about but we're curious about anyway (either for lack of reviews or just in general), or more like "Here's an excerpt of something I'm working on, what do you think?"

Have a mod who knows the difference between trolling and honest critiquing. Make it *very very clear* that anyone who gets butthurt and screams 'troll' because someone pointed out legitimate flaws will not be allowed to post again.

Just make the rules and expectations very clear and be prepared to back them up.

I'm posting this as a thread here, though, so I won't really have that kind of power at all, hence my asking. If I were making this a full on community - might in the future, but somewhat using F!S as a testing ground for that - then it would be easy to limit the trolling. On a thread here? Not so much. :|

Ooooh, i misunderstood.

I think this comm has pretty good troll-dar, it shouldn't be too hard to keep the trolling to a minimum.

Let's hope. *crosses fingers*

I think it would be better to see if people actually troll the threads first, but that's just me being disappointed that this is already leaning in favor of Wednesday since I'm only here on Fridays and Sundays.

Well, the reason for making it weekly is that these things would probably take a little while in terms of time to read + comment, so I may post it on Wednesday but it might still be going on Friday. That said, I'm honestly not sure which way I'll go, right now - I want to go on Friday but Wednesday might be 'safer'.

I'd go with the weekend (Saturday or Sunday) as the posts go up earlier and last longer, so people from different time zones can participate. I'd join in, but if you post the thread during a weekday there's no point for me, as the secret posts go up around midnight and when I come back from work the next day, when I usually check FS, the post is basically done and over with.
