Inspired by the acting question

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one who doesn't really... notice bad acting in shows/movies? I mean, sometimes I do, but so often someone will say "oh this scene was so poorly acted!" and I won't have noticed.

Even had accents are like that... I never realized Drusilla's (from Buffy) accent was supposed to be British until those flashbacks; I thought her voice was part of her insanity.

I think parts of her voice were supposed to reflect her mental state, on top of her having an accent.

Personally, it depends? Sometimes I notice, sometimes I don't. Though, if it's someone failing at a southern accent I always pick up on it [and usually pity them if it seems like they really are trying to do a good job at the accent.]

I think it has to be really bad for me to notice. Or like a particular kind of dramatic scene. Accent quality I'm better about noticing, but yeah I think I'm pretty bad at identifying bad acting unless it's horrendous.

I don't necessarily notice bad acting and when I do, I don't necessarily mind it. If I'm sympathetic to the story or characters, it takes a lot to get me back in the critical headspace where I see acting choices as acting and not just the way the character does things.

I also feel like a lot of bad acting is just bad writing or directing in disguise.
