Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 04:57 am (UTC)(link)if the OP stops reading every book where a passage or a theme offends him/her, it's going to limit him/her eventually - if not in the classroom, then in life. I think their views of a lot of things will narrow down in uncomfortable ways if they only choose the things that won't disturb them. It used to be a GOOD thing to get out of your comfort zone, these days people use phrases like "I'm not okay with that" to stay in safe little boxes and I don't see how it be a positive thing. The overall themes of a book like 1984, what it spotlights in maybe our society and where we are going, are WORTH some discomfort. I read that book over 25 years ago, and while a lot of it was not comfort reading to me, SOME of the things stuck. Like why Winston and the female protagonist (according to my English teacher) began to have sex - not just because they wanted to have sex (if I recall correctly, neither one of them got a lot of pleasure out of it, or maybe that was my 16-year old impression) but because it was a form of rebellion against the society they lived in - and that helped form my opinion about protest, passive, subtle, aggressive, whatnot. And what it means to be rebellious.
I apologize if I can't see the OP's point of view, kind of, but maybe it's because I'm old school. "That makes me uncomfortable, therefore I am not okay with it and I won't read it" just seems like...I don't know...an overly privileged thing to say. And if I tried to explain what I mean by that, I'd probably fail. So...yeah.

Also I think people should step out of their comfort zones, not be pushed out.
