That FFVIII was terrible and one of the weakest FFs? I hear that all the time. But I think they're conflating the second half of the game with the whole game, when there was an abrupt and absolute tonal shift at the end of the second disc from "fantastical military drama" to "bullshit teenaged romance". Discs 1 and 2 were great. 3 and 4 were some of the weakest writing in the whole damned series.
