I don't think Madoka Magica is realistic and haunting.

...Was it supposed to be? I thought it was supposed to be fantastical and philosophical.

It couldn't possibly have been meant to be realistic. I definitely found parts of it haunting, though, probably due to the style and setting and music of certain scenes.

It's not that the show is realistic, maybe it's just the corner I'm in but lots of fans say it is - probly part of the belief that everything have to be dark and despair to be "realistic"

I've never find Madoka to be haunting, I actually think they make some part over the top just to make it dark enough. Sad, yes, but not enough to make me think about it days afterward like lots of people claim to
